Hayfever Relief & Prevention

Advice from Dr David Mais about prevention and cure for the hayfever season.

  1. Avoid contact with pollen as much as possible. Keep your home very clean by vacuuming and steam cleaning all floors and floor coverings regularly.
  2. Keep the air in your home free from pollen and other contaminants. Use an air filter and ioniser in the rooms where you spend the most time. Air conditioning can help, but make sure that the unit is cleaned well and often. Keep all windows closed.
  3. Avoid going outdoors in the morning and evening when the pollen levels can be highest.
  4. Pets will bring pollen and other pollutants into your home. It is a good idea to give them a thorough bath at least three times a week during the hay fever season.

Hayfever relief : treatment and cures.

  1. Use a cream such as Vaseline inside your nose to help block the pollen
  2. Nasal sprays are available in many forms. A doctor or pharmacist will advise what is the most appropriate. Antihistamines will relieve most symptoms and are available in spray or tablet form. If you suffer severe hay fever, probably to best sprays to use are steroid based. These can give excellent results. Your doctor can give you a prescription for Beconase, Flonase or Rhinocort.
  3. Herbal treatments, acupuncture and traditional remedies. Some people find these to be effective, but in my opinion they are very much an act of faith and provide a placebo effect. There is little or no controlled test data available for any of these. However, if you are prepared to believe that any of these will work for you, give them a try.
  4. Sublingual Immunotherapy. This involves putting a few drops of allergen extracts (pollen for treating hay fever) daily under the tongue about seven weeks before the hay fever season. The body then builds up an immunity to pollen and this treatment has a very good success rate.

There are many sources of information about hay fever on the internet, some of which are trying to promote specific products. My advice is to consult your doctor or pharmacist before trying any form of treatment.
